Nearly everyone would like to change their lives in some way but they don’t. Their resistance to change is based on fear.
Mostly it is fear of failure but sometimes it is through a fear of their own success. There is only one solution—you have to face the fear and do what you have to do.
At this point it may be a good time to read about my own fear, or was it terror, that I experienced, which I describe in the story about “My career in classified advertising.“
What I am trying to convey is, no matter how inexperienced or how afraid you are the only thing to do is to step out of your comfort zone and face the challenge.
Facing the fear will not be as bad as the fear itself. Once you have climbed that mountain you will find the view from the top is exhilarating.
Once I had made that first terrifying call and found I had survived it, I found it quite thrilling to be able to walk into any business and say to the owner
“My name is Don Westacott, I work for the Western Mail and Echo, I have a few Ideas that will bring more customers to your business.”
Because of the feeling of achievement that overcoming this fear gave me, I opened every door I could find on my territory. It became a thrill rather than a problem and I made my presentation with enthusiasm.
I was the only salesman on the team who actually enjoyed cold calling. Because of this excitement and enthusiasm within3 months I became the top salesman in the team.
The memory of that first day of terror is still as vivid today, 45 years later, as they were then.
Every time I remember them I thank God that I closed my eyes and pushed those doors open. What say I hadn’t?
In order for us to change the things about our lives that we are not happy about we have to change the way we think. If we don’t change the way we think we will continue to get the same results in our lives. In order for us to make the changes we have to face our worst enemy which is, our own fear.
About 90% of the population live throughout their lives in fear of change and never become the person that they dream of becoming. This is simply because they just fail to take action. They fear what they don’t understand. It is best if you look at fear as just another word or as a learning process. We have simply connected the word to a feeling, giving it power over us. Mark Twain showed us the best way to deal with it when he said “ Do the things that you fear most and the death to fear is certain.” There’s only one way to prove this for yourself and that is to do it. You will be amazed how thrilled you will be afterwards and what new opportunities open up for you now that this enemy is dead in the water.
Learn to leave your comfort zone and you will become a more rounded person. The fears that you have overcome now form past of your new comfort zone and when the same situation arises again you will not stress over it you will just do it.
We must set our minds on conquering the unknown. Always look fear in the eyes and just do what you have to do, the chances are you will succeed. Every successful person has undoubtedly faced fear many times and had they not faced and overcome their fears they would have not been successful.
Remember that who we are today is a result of the limitations put on us for our safety as children and those limitations although outmoded by the fact that we have grown up still have the power to stop us from becoming who we want to be. We have this built in fear of any change in our lives.
Once we understand this we can look at each of our limiting beliefs and start to change those that are no longer appropriate to our future way of life. To accomplish these changes we use the power of positive thought. You can become successful in any aspect of your life that you choose, all you have to do is get past one thing—yourself.
When you start down this road you will realise that you can become the person you always wanted to be. You start to life the life that is rightfully yours. It’s called life. We are here to enjoy life to the full not just a small part of it. Life is just a succession of moments. The only moment you have is the present one. You have no life in the past moments, you have no certainty of life in future moments, all of your life is in the here and now and that is why it’s the “Present.” It is a gift so enjoy and make the most of it.
I have learned that happiness is a state of mind.
Your happiness is not vested in your bank balance, your house or the car that you drive. Accept whatever situation you find yourself in and be happy in the moment. If you can change or improve the situation change it, if not accept it and be happy in the moment. Nothing lasts forever because change is a fact of life. By accepting the situation in the moment does not prevent you from improving it but it puts you in a stronger mental state while you figure out the way for you to change it. Believe in yourself and start by facing and conquering you fears. Now I will outline some facts that will show you that you are not alone with your personal misgivings about who and what you are.
We all go through the growth and identity problems as we develop into adults and often we feel trapped by circumstances over which we have no control.
However there are some facts about life in general that will throw light upon the opportunities for growth and self improvement that are available to anyone who wishes to take advantage of them.
Over a century ago a very wise man named Benjamin Franklin is reported to have said, “There are two things in life that are certain,
Death and Taxation”.
Well as wise as he was he didn’t get it quite right, I have learned over the years, that there are three things in life that are certain: -
Death, Taxation and Change.
Change is a constant. It is all around us and it affects everything in the world.
Even our bodies are in a constant state of change. Every moment of our lives, thousands of cells in our bodies are dying and are being replaced by new ones. All the soft tissue of our skin is being replaced approximately every six months and even our bones are being reconstructed on a seven-year cycle.
You become a whole new person every seven years!
On this premise, I am now in my twelfth body, but from personal experience I can tell you, over the long run, after say the 5th body, they don’t necessarily get any better!
In the last 50 years, science and knowledge has progressed more than in the previous 1000 years.
90% of all the most famous scientists who ever lived are still alive today and to one of them I am forever grateful for the discovery that he made. He was a professor at Harvard who discovered that people can change.
We are living in an era of the most rapid change in the history of mankind, and it is foolish to resist change, if you do you will be overtaken and swallowed up by it.
Compared to today’s environment, our education and cultural beliefs are like echoes from the dark ages. Just look at how communication has changed: from word of mouth to messages on clay tablets, to letters through the mail, to printed books to radio, email and now on to the next wave of change, social and video networking.
We must learn to adapt quickly by embracing change rather than resisting it.
