The greatest Discovery of the 20th Century.

By donwestacott

One of the greatest discoveries of this century, made by a professor at Harvard, is that “People can Change”.

We all have a mental image of ourselves, which was formed in our first seven years of life – our formative years – which gave us the sense of who, and what, we are. This is our self-image, which seems to be constant. This idea of ourselves is known as “The Unchanging Self”.
I remember I still felt like “the same old me,” the person I wasn’t happy with, until I was 30yrs old, when fortunately I learned about this professor’s work.
It proves that our self-image, which controls the way we think about ourselves and the way we interact with the world, can be changed! I was glad to set about making the change. Our mind determines our world; our world is a reflection of our attitude towards our lives and ourselves and is seen as good or bad, depending on our own self-image.
Everything starts in the mind, and that’s where the changes have to be made!
Facing the Challenges.
The idea I had of myself as an introvert, was limiting my life, so that was a change I needed to make. I wasn’t sure what to do but I remember reading in Frank Bettger’s book “ How I raised myself from failure to success in selling.” how nervous he was of speaking in front of business people,
He solved it, by signing up for a course in ‘public speaking’.
I decided to do the same. The prospect terrified me; nevertheless I knew this was a mountain I had to climb.
Despite the terror of the first few meetings I soon began to enjoy the challenge.
Over the years the ability to speak at a business meeting and from there to progress to addressing groups of people and later to be able to give a speech at large conferences and on television, has enabled me not only to multiply my income but has also given me a deeper sense of fulfilment.
The Tools that you have.
It’s helpful to know that in the course of a year there are 8760 hours.
If we allow eight hours a day for sleeping, which equals 2920 hours and we spend 1800 hours working, we are left with 4000 hours during which we are neither working nor sleeping. This leaves a vast reservoir of untapped potential with which to increase your mental and physical abilities. If you just take one hour a day, five days a week to exercise your mind on how to improve your knowledge, or your sales skills, or your level of service, or on changing your self image, you will soon be taking the high road to a better income and quality of life.
To Summarise: -
Who you think you are was formed in your mind by the time you were seven years old.
This person was constrained by a lot of negatives, laid upon you by your parents and teachers in their well-intentioned efforts to keep you safe, with phrases like “you can’t do this” “you mustn’t do that” “don’t do that – it’s not safe.” etc.
This conditioning could still be controlling your life and the things you do – even though you are now an adult. The good news is “we can change”
We can change the mental image that we have of ourselves which will enable us to create a more fulfilling life.
Success starts in the mind because –everything starts in the mind.
But what is success?
+
I have heard many definitions but the one that rings true for me is the one given by Earl Nightingale of Connant Nightingale the publishers who market the works of some of the most successful people in the world.  He said
“ Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy aim.”
Successful people are not people without problems – they are people who have learned how to solve their problems. They are also people who set and review their goals.
